This list is a few things.  For one, it’s predictably, perhaps disappointingly, skewed towards indie rock/alt country/americana/anything that sounds like Springsteen.  It shouldn’t go without saying that I’ve listened to approximately .1% of the new music released this past year, and that of the music I have listened to, it’s been a scarily narrow range in genre.  Along those lines, it also shouldn’t go without saying that this collection of songs is aggressively rockist, which means that The Pretender is not quite yet ready to make that poptimist jump and start writing about Ke$ha around these parts.  That being said, these ten songs are all incredible, and here are a few highlights

-You Are Not Alone: The line “open up this is a raid.”

-Hallelujah: The first-person narrator, whose presence only increases and gets stronger after he dies a minute into the song.

-Birthday Boy: the bridge, in which in the middle of a song about a stripper we learn about small towns and old men and natural disasters and growing old in the space of a few lines.

-All I Want (Live): When the band first kicks in fifteen seconds in.

-The Weekenders: The classic Craig Finn line (an obvious choice): “She said the theme of this party’s the industrial age; and you came in dressed like a trainwreck.”

-Bring It On: The backup singing, especially during the Please Mr. Postman “Wait a minute, wait a minute’s” during the bridge (another highlight).

-All The Best: The entire second verse.
